Zeolite Nanocrystals (MOR, EU-1, and ZSM-12) Synthesized Using a Versatile Diquaternary Ammonium Template as Robust Catalysts

Nanocrystals of zeolites with shortened diffusional pathways compared to bulk counterparts are attractive catalysts, but their direct synthesis often remains challenging and expensive. Here, we describe the utility p-phenylenedimethylene–bis(trimethylammonium) dichloride, an organic diquaternary ammonium compound that can be easily prepared, as effective structure-directing agent (OSDA) for obtaining several composed agglomerated nanocrystals. By modifying gel composition (NaOH/Si Si/Al ratios) crystallization time, tuned obtain mordenite, EU-1, ZSM-12 zeolites. 13C NMR spectra occluded OSDA reveal subtle differences in host–guest interactions between respective zeolites, which derives from flexibility OSDA. The relatively strong interaction inorganic aluminosilicate precursor species during induction period explains how small zeolite nanocrystals obtained. Nanosized EU-1 significantly outperform corresponding acid catalysts methanol-to-hydrocarbons reaction alkylation benzene benzyl alcohol, respectively.
